What you can deduct for Nassau property tax

The 2026 federal SALT limit, and what it means for your bill.

For 2026 you can deduct up to $40,400 of state and local taxes if you itemize. Property tax and New York income tax count together. The limit shrinks above $505,000 of income, to no less than $10,000.

What counts

Property tax you paid during 2026, on school and general bills, and New York State income tax withheld or paid. Tax paid from escrow counts in the year your lender paid it. Married couples filing separately get half of each figure.

When it lowers your tax

Only when your itemized deductions add up to more than the standard deduction: $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, $24,150 for heads of household and $16,100 for single filers in 2026.

After a grievance

If your state and local taxes are over the limit, a lower property tax bill costs you no federal deduction. If they are under it and you itemize, a smaller deduction offsets part of the saving. Check a property.

Later years

Under 26 U.S.C. 164(b)(7), the limit and the income threshold rise 1% a year through 2029. From 2030 the limit returns to $10,000.
