How to read the table
- The levy is what the district raises from property taxes, as proposed in May. Nassau budget votes almost always pass it.
- The tax cap limits how much a levy can grow, usually 2% or inflation if lower, plus exclusions such as some capital costs. A district can go over it only with 60% of the vote.
- Spending per pupil divides the whole budget, not just the levy, by enrollment. Central high school districts and the K–8 districts that feed them each count only their own students.
- Your bill is your share of the levy, set by your assessed value against your neighbors’. How your tax bill is calculated.
Common questions
How much school tax does Nassau County levy in 2026–27?
Nassau’s 56 school districts, including the three central high school districts, proposed $5.19 billion in property tax levies for 2026–27, according to the State Education Department’s property tax report card. The typical district’s levy rose 2.3% from the year before.
Which Nassau school districts went over the tax cap?
For 2026–27, Uniondale and Lynbrook proposed a levy above the State tax cap’s limit, which needs at least 60% of voters to pass. Every other Nassau district stayed within its limit.
Does a lower school levy mean a lower school tax bill?
Not by itself. The levy is split among every property in the district by assessed value, so your share depends on your assessment against your neighbors’. A grievance can’t change the levy, but it can lower your share of it.
You can’t grieve the levy, but you can grieve your share of it. Check your assessment, see what homeowners pay in each school district, or see how many homes grieve in each district.
